Water thefts becoming a problem in Hanover, York County


Hanover, York County, is under mandatory water restrictions, and now it is dealing with people stealing water.There have been five water thefts over the last five weeks.Most have been fire hydrants, but the borough says thieves have also tapped into water mains.Hanover Borough says the thieves were caught in the act after it received tips.The amount of water stolen is not known because there is no way to monitor the loss. The borough says the thieves, a homeowner in one case and contractors in others, had to pay a $500 unauthorized water usage fee. If those who have been warned do it again, the borough promises to file charges against them. The borough is asking for the community’s help in stopping it from happening again.“We need the communities helping to protect their water source. They are paying for it, and we need their help in protecting it,” said the Hanover Borough manager, Margie Lewis.The borough manager says there is a possibility there have been water thefts the borough doesn’t know about.York County is still in a drought watch, so the borough has no plans to lift its mandatory water conservation measures, but Lewis said recent rain has definitely improved the water supply.
