San Francisco Power Outage Affecting 4K Resolved, PG&E Reports


Thousands of San Franciscans were without power on Monday morning, according to PG&E’s website.

The outage, which began around 9:20 a.m., left 4,266 San Francisco customers without power, a PG&E spokesperson said.

The outage was resolved at 1:58 p.m. after the utility restored power to the last 60 customers affected.

A PG&E worker was dispatched shortly after the outage occurred, found a downed wire at Thomas Avenue and Third Street and made the area safe, a PG&E spokesperson said.

All but 60 customers had power restored within one hour by switching affected households to an active power line that wasn’t impacted by the outage, the spokesperson said.

PG&E crews remain on site to make repairs and reinstall the wire.

Around 10 a.m., the outage appeared to mostly affect the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood and areas around Bayshore Boulevard. Parts of the Mission District and Portola appear to be affected, too. Customers just across the San Francisco city border may also be experiencing a power cut, according to PG&E’s service map.

PG&E said at 9:52 a.m. that 7,869 customers were without power, but the utility’s distribution operations team later issued a corrected count of 4,266 affected customers at 10:27 a.m.

PG&E is still investigating what caused the wire at Third and Thomas streets to fall, but a PG&E spokesperson said there can be a “myriad” of causes.

“Sometimes it can be a fallen tree branch, also if there are a lot of birds sitting on a wire and they all get up at the same time that can cause it to go down,” the spokesperson said.
