Airbus on Monday (May 6) announced that IndiGo has placed a firm order for 30 A350-900 aircraft. This significant move marks IndiGo’s foray into the wide-body segment, expanding its fleet to cater to long-range international routes.
“India, the world’s fastest growing major aviation market, is on the verge of an international travel boom as the economy grows and household incomes rise,” Airbus said in a statement.
“The A350 is perfectly positioned to serve the country’s aspirations for long-range travel,” it said.

IndiGo to enter wide-body segment soon
The announcement comes after IndiGo revealed on April 25 that it had agreed to place the order, marking the budget carrier’s entry into the wide-body segment.
India’s largest airline, also ranked among the world’s biggest budget carriers in terms of passengers flown, has firmly signaled its intentions with this recent order. Having dominated the Indian skies, it now aspires to make a significant global impact with non-stop, long-haul flights originating from Indian airports.
The statement from Airbus also highlighted that the A350 is the most modern and efficient wide-body aircraft in the 300-410 seater category. This acquisition underscores IndiGo’s strategic move to expand its fleet and capture a larger share of the lucrative international travel market.
