Ticket sales from $1.3B Powerball jackpot means millions for Oregon

Ticket sales from the $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot that resulted in a winning ticket bought at a Northeast Portland Plaid Pantry generated millions of dollars for the state, lottery officials said Tuesday.

Officials with the Oregon Lottery said they’ve been in contact with the winner, who bought the ticket at the Plaid Pantry at 6060 N.E. Columbia Blvd., but they said need to go through a security and vetting process before they identify that person publicly.

That vetting process could take a couple of weeks, they said.

At Tuesday’s news conference, officials said $7.6 million from ticket sales will go to fund public programs including education, state parks, economic development and veteran services, and retailers who sold the tickets earned $1.8 million in commission.

Plaid Pantry CEO Jonathan Polonsky said the extra money from the jackpot is great for the community. The store that sold the winning ticket will also get some of that money.

“And so this store will have a hundred thousand dollars going to their bottom line in the month of April, which is gonna do great for, you know, the store associates, participate in a bonus program, and so that will help, you know, have a bigger bonus for them,” he said at the news conference.

As for the winner, if they take the cash option, they’ll get about $621 million. After state and federal taxes, however, they’ll get to take home about $330 million.

The winner’s ticket matched all six Powerball numbers in Saturday’s drawing.

“We’ve never had a jackpot this large in Oregon won here. There’s a lot of moving pieces,” Oregon Lottery spokesperson Melanie Mesaros said.

The prize was the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history and the eighth largest among U.S. jackpot games, according to the Oregon Lottery.

Oregon has had five previous Powerball jackpot winners, including two families who shared a $340 million prize in 2005.

The largest U.S. lottery jackpot won was $2.04 billion in California in 2022.
