Slac Meeting: Industries await SLAC meeting, approval to set up units |

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has emerged as one of the most industrialized states of the country with many companies gearing up to set up their units here, but a large number of applications are still awaiting approval because the state level approval committee (SLAC) has not held a meeting for more than a year. Many large units and MSME units in various sectors are eagerly awaiting the meeting because they do not get clarity till the meeting is held.A state govt source said, “SLAC is headed by the industries minister and has ACS and other representatives as its members. The last SLAC meeting was held in April-May 2023. Due to this, the applicant industries are still waiting for their applications to be approved. There are companies that submitted their applications around three years ago and were asked to make some changes to their plans. After making the changes, they again applied for approval. But for the last one year, the revised applications are also pending since SLAC has not met.” A representative of a leading industry association said, “A significant number of projects are stuck because the SLAC meeting has not taken place for almost a year. Companies that are planning to set up their units in Gujarat are in a dilemma over whether to wait for the meeting or invest in other states. They want to know if they will get the approval or not because they plan investments based on their future market projections. Now that the polls are over, the SLAC should meet soon.” A senior member of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) said, “A large number of textile units have been waiting for the new textile policy in the state for a long time. However, those units, which were set up after the earlier policy was implemented, have been facing issues following the change in the definition of MSME units. The units, which were under the large industry category earlier, now fall under MSME, following which they are entitled to higher interest subsidy. However, this issue has been pending for a long time because the SLAC meeting for the textile industry is pending.”
