Sick Leave: Air India Express Crew Union Alleges Management’s Ill Treatment |

Kochi: More than 100 senior flight attendants of Air India Express (AIE) went suddenly on “sick leave”, pushing the state’s four airports into chaos. Even as the leaders of employees’ union said the cabin crew are “not on strike”, their allegations on the management’s labour law violations mean the issue might continue for at least a couple of days.AIE Employees Union leaders said the management has been violating labour laws after Tatas took over the PSU. “The cabin crew are on sick leave and not on strike. At the same time, there are major issues faced by employees. Following the AirAsia-AIE merger, the tenure of employees’ contracts has been reduced to one year from five. They are getting 20% less as salary,” said AIEEU president K K Vijayakumar.“After the merger, two unfamiliar flight attendants in different schedules must stay in the same room. As per norms, cabin crew should have enjoyed 12 hours’ uninterrupted sleep prior to flying. If a flight attendant is to turn up for duty at 2am and the second at 6am, it will cause sleep disturbance. Despite repeated requests, the management is not ready to restore the earlier system,” Vijayakumar, who is also a national committee member of BMS, said. Regional labour commissioner, Delhi, who is considering a petition by the employees sent a letter to Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran. “Mismanagement and blatant violations of labour laws were apparent,” stated the mail.“Guests may visit the “Flight Status” section on our website. If their flight is cancelled, or delayed beyond three hours, they may opt for a full refund or reschedule to a later date without any fees on Tia (chatbot) on WhatsApp (+91 6360012345) or on airindiaexpress.com,” an AIE spokesperson added.
