NorthWestern Energy installing new pipeline in Missoula

NorthWestern Energy is installing a gas pipeline near the Madison Street Bridge.

This project will increase natural gas capacity in the area and replace the existing natural gas pipeline under the Clark Fork River.

The following was sent out by NorthWestern Energy:

NorthWestern Energy is installing an 8-inch natural gas pipeline near the Madison Street Bridge in Missoula using a Horizontal Directional Drill (Bore) construction method.

This NorthWestern Energy infrastructure project will increase natural gas capacity in the area and replace an existing natural gas pipeline under the Clark Fork River.

A depth/hydrologic study by a registered professional engineer was completed as part of the permitting process.

This study determines the depth required for the pipeline under the riverbed. NorthWestern Energy is boring the pipeline at a depth far exceeding the permitting requirements to ensure safety and environmental compliance.

As with all natural gas pipelines, this is a non-liquid carrying pipeline.

Construction equipment will be located at Jeannette Rankin Park on 600 block of South 5th Street East. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured for the safety of the public and the construction crews.

Construction work will occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays until about the end of January.

The new pipeline will provide increased service reliability for NorthWestern Energy’s Missoula customers.
