Officer Jamal Mitchell’s funeral will take place Monday at Hillhouse High School’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The funeral for fallen Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell will occur in New Haven Monday at the Hillhouse High School Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Mitchell, a 36-year-old New Haven native, was killed in the line of duty on May 30 as he responded to a shots fired complaint and attempted to help a man in the street he thought was injured, the Associated Press reported. That man then shot Mitchell several times without warning.
The gunman and two others were killed as well, according to AP. Mitchell had only been a police officer for approximately a year and a half. Thousands of people attended a memorial for him in Minneapolis this week before his body was flown to Connecticut.
On Monday, Mitchell’s funeral services will be open to the public, as viewing hours go from 9-11 a.m. before the service takes place. Mitchell will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, the Hartford Courant reported.
As the funeral nears, police in Minneapolis are working to raise the funds to cover the travel expenses for 50 officers and 20 Honor Guard officers to fly to Connecticut. A GoFundMe page has already raised $21,410, as of early Saturday evening.
The page was created by the Minneapolis Police Foundation. Foundation President Amy Sizer weighed in on what the group is looking to accomplish before Monday.
“We are seeking funding for flights, hotel rooms, rental cars, food, etc. Any remaining funding will assist in making a memorial for Officer Mitchell at his precinct and support for the entire Minneapolis Police Department,” Sizer said on the GoFundMe page.
