Joseph A. Gallo, Sr.

100, Hollsopple, died July 7, 2023 at Windber Hospice. Born November 17, 1922 in Hollsopple. Son of Paul, Sr. and Pauline (Scalora) Gallo. Preceded in death by parents; first wife, Marion (Maguire) Gallo; second wife, Virginia (Horten) Gallo; daughter, Marleen Jo Gallo; grandson, Mark Gallo; great-grandson, Coen Burnette; brothers, Samuel, Michael and Paul Gallo and sisters, Sadie Vanscovich and Magdalene Schatte. Survived by children, Paula married to William King of Hollsopple, Mark Gallo of Monrovia, Liberia, Sandra married to Randy Roberts of Hollsopple, Joseph, Jr. married to Kathryn (Miller) of Stoystown, Christopher married to former Johnna (Haydu) of Johnstown and Lynn married to Andrew Dudish of Johnstown; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was a 1940 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School. He worked at US Steel until he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII in 1943. He served with the 138th Sea Bee Battalion in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and in the South Pacific. He then operated the former Gallo’s Barber Shop in Hollsopple for many years. He also worked for Fedderolf Coal Co. and J&R Sales of Jerome as a welder/mechanic. Was employed by former Island Creek Coal Co., Tire Hill and retired as a superintendent for Berwind White Coal Co. Member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Davidsville where he served as lector for many years. Also a charter and life member of Hollsopple Memorial Post 8861, VFW where he held all offices over the years. He served as Somerset County Commander for the VFW and 23rd VFW District Commander for Fayette and Somerset Counties. Charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 8979, Hollsopple where he held office of Grand Knight for four years and held most other offices and was a member of the Father Dodson Assembly. Life member of Jerome Post 802, American Legion and a member of UMWA. In the 1960’s Joe operated a mink farm. He built 5 of the houses in which he lived and in his spare time he enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling. The family would like to thank the 3B staff at Somerset Hospital and Windber Hospice for all the care given to Joe. Viewing from 2-5PM Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville. Funeral Mass 10AM Monday at St. Anne Church, Davidsville with Rev. Fr. Karl Kolodziejski, Celebrant. Committal St. Anne Cemetery, Hollsopple with military honors.
