Hurricane man who stole funds from care home sentenced

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — A Hurricane man was sentenced to prison Monday for embezzling around $106,500 from a fraternal organization’s historic charitable care home.

As treasurer of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows’ (IOOF) Board of Directors, Paul Richard Spurlock, 67, stole the funds from the IOOF operated Odd Fellows and Rebekah Home in Elkins, which provided housing and care for those in need. He reportedly wrote at least 33 unauthorized checks for himself from July 8, 2015, to around January 22, 2019.

According to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Spurlock pleaded guilty to stealing the funds last year, but it was this Monday that he was officially sentenced to eight months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay back the amount stolen in restitution after his release.

Due to financial issues, the Odd Fellows Home was closed and auctioned off in 2022.
