According to a PR published by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on April 17, 2024, the company has successfully clinched the largest-ever defense export deal for a South Korean company in Latin America, involving the construction of four naval ships for Peru. The contract, valued at approximately 6,406 billion KRW (4,5 billion $), was signed with the Peruvian state-owned SIMA Shipyard.

The ceremony took place at the Centro Naval de San Borja in Lima, attended by high-profile figures including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Vice President Ju Won-ho, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Lino Adrianzen Olaya, Defense Minister Walter Astudillo Chavez, Finance Minister Jose Arista Arbildo, Navy Commander Luis Jose Polar Figari, and SIMA Shipyard Director Cesar Augusto Benavides Iraola. This milestone follows approximately three weeks after HD Hyundai was selected as the preferred negotiator.
The ships, including a 3,400-ton frigate, a 2,200-ton offshore patrol vessel, and two 1,400-ton landing ships, will be built in collaboration with the SIMA Shipyard in Peru. These vessels are scheduled for delivery to the Peruvian Navy by 2030, with HD Hyundai providing design, equipment supply, and technical support while SIMA manages the construction.
This agreement not only reinforces the strategic partnership between HD Hyundai and the Peruvian government and navy for the next 15 years but also positions the company favorably for future naval contracts. Peru is expected to order an additional five frigates, three offshore patrol vessels, and two landing ships, with HD Hyundai anticipated to be the primary contractor.
Technical data
The recently secured frigate features a length of 127 meters and a width of 14.9 meters, with a maximum speed of 26.5 knots and an operational range of 6,000 nautical miles. It is equipped with anti-ship missiles and vertical launch systems, and will be fitted with an AESA radar.
The offshore patrol vessel measures 95 meters in length and 14.3 meters in width, capable of reaching a top speed of 20 knots and covering a range of 6,000 nautical miles. It can operate a medium-sized maritime operations helicopter and will incorporate a flexible Mission Module to facilitate a variety of tasks.
The landing ship, with a length of 58 meters and a width of 13.2 meters, has a top speed of 10 knots and a range of 1,500 nautical miles. It can transport more than seven large armored vehicles or over twenty 20-foot containers.
