Chattanooga woman says a simple oil change left her without a car | Local News

A Chattanooga woman is upset with a recent experience at an instant oil change company she visited last month.

Emma Grier said she went to the Valvoline near Hamilton Place to get her oil changed, but after the service was complete, she said her car would not start.

Grier said this was her first time visiting Valvoline, an instant oil change place.

Once the oil change started, Grier said an employee stepped away for a few minutes to buy an oil filter for her.

The process took about 30 minutes.

“After they did my car, I went to start it, and it wouldn’t crank. I went to start it, and it wouldn’t crank again. We kept on trying, and then they pushed it over to the side. After they pushed it, me and my daughter-in-law were trying to get the car cranked, and I had to call a tow truck,” Grier said.

Grier said the employee brushed it off by telling her it could be several problems.

“You must be out of gas. Something does happen after you get an oil change. Something does go down with your car, and they pushed it over there. I said, well maybe it does,” Grier said.

So, she had her car towed to a nearby mechanic to get it fixed.

The tow and the diagnostic test cost her about $276, leaving her without a car for nearly three days.

“He says we diagnosed it; he said what was wrong is that the fuse had been moved. The fuse wasn’t put back in the same spot, it was put in another place. He said it fired right up when he put the fuse,” Grier said.

After getting the car fixed, Grier returned to Valvoline to share what happened but told Local 3 she had no luck.

“I called the head company, and she called me back and said let me contact the manager, and I’ll get to him. She called me back, asked me for the VIN, and told me to email her the VIN. I emailed the VIN. Three weeks have gone by and I haven’t seen anybody,” Grier said.

Grier has also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and we called to confirm that it is currently pending.

I reached out to the Valvoline near Hamilton Place. The manager I spoke with knew about the matter but declined to comment. We are waiting to hear back from corporate at the moment.

We did check reviews on Google; they have more than 300 reviews and more than four stars.

It is also worth noting that almost all of the negative reviews have responses from the company.
