An Equatorial Margin oil spill could cause international chaos

An oil spill near the mouth of the Amazon River could have catastrophic consequences, affecting not only Brazil’s northern coast but also the neighboring countries of Suriname and Guyana, as well as French Guiana. 

  • That is the conclusion of a recent study conducted by the Scientific and Technological Research Institute of the State of Amapá (IEPA), carried out with the support of Greenpeace.

👉 Why it matters. Brazil’s state-controlled oil major Petrobras is keen to drill for oil in and around the mouth of the Amazon River, in a region known as the Equatorial Margin — dubbed one of the world’s biggest potential new oil frontiers. But despite the potentially high rewards, Petrobras’ plans are also very high risk.
