The City of Emporia is continuing to ask residents to help conserve water now through Friday night.
The request comes as water use has remained high over the past several days with 12 million gallons being used Tuesday alone. The typical amount of use is between 6 to 8 million gallons per day.
Residents are encouraged to practice “responsible water use” through 9 pm Friday evening. This means limiting outdoor use for watering lawns and washing cars as much as possible.
City staff are continuously monitoring the situation to see if further conservation will be needed. The city is thanking residents for their cooperation even though it will be inconvenient.

The city of Emporia is asking residents across town to conserve water on a voluntary basis through at least the rest of the day.
City Manager Trey Cocking joined KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday for an update, saying water use is up around 50 percent this week from normal.
Normal water use is around 6-8 million gallons per day. Numbers this week have been as high as 12 million gallons Tuesday.
Residents are also asked to report any and all water leaks to Public Works at 620-340-6339 — and they are asked to pass the word along to neighbors, friends and family members.
Cocking says the city will re-evaluate the situation late Wednesday before determining whether similar steps are needed for Thursday or Friday. The goal, he says, is to keep the water storage tanks full and avoid any boil water alerts from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
