Waterfront Newport Beach House Lists for $74 million – DIRT

Down in Orange County, just off the Newport Beach coastline, a Colonial-style residence that’s been inhabited by three generations of the same family for over seven decades has popped up for sale on ultra-exclusive Harbor Island, as was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Built way back in the 1930s, and resting on two oversized lots stretching to the water’s edge, the asking price is a hefty $74 million; and should the place go for anywhere near that amount, it would set a record for the most expensive O.C. residential real estate transaction ever recorded — eclipsing the $70 million hedge-fund manager Joseph Edelman paid for his oceanfront mansion in Laguna Beach’s Irvine Cove community in 2021.

Resting on an almost half-acre parcel laced with towering eucalyptus trees, and one of less than 30 homes on the tiny semi-artificial island accessible via a guard-gated bridge, the two-story structure could be “restored, expanded or completely reimagined into something that will stand for the next one hundred years,” per the listing. There are six bedrooms and five baths in 3,600 square feet of well-maintained yet largely original living space.

While interior photos are scarce — other than living and dining rooms boasting picture windows offering picturesque water views — other notable amenities include a spacious brick terrace overlooking a grassy lawn that flows to the bay, an interior courtyard and mature gardens. One of only a few remaining estate-sized parcels on Newport Harbor, the property also has an attached two-car garage, plus a private boat dock that can accommodate “several” 100-foot yachts.

According to WSJ, Leslie Shattuck and her siblings have decided to sell the property, which has been in their family since 1951, because their mother Catherine Shattuck recently passed away. “Rather than one of us getting it,” she said, “we just decided that it’s best that no one gets it.”

The listing is jointly held by Rob Giem of Compass, and Evan Corkett and Steve High of Coldwell Banker Realty.
