Waste Management: Residents seek solution to Doon’s waste woes | Dehradun News

Dehradun: Frequent strikes by sanitation workers have severely disrupted waste management in Dehradun, prompting residents to demand an alternative system. Workers in 47 wards managed by an agency under the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) went on strike on Tuesday over delayed salaries and lack of raises. Although work has resumed, the interruption of door-to-door waste collection during peak summer has left the city struggling.“There seems to be a strike every month due to long-standing issues like payment delays. A solution should have been found by now,” said DD Arora from Rajendra Nagar RWA. “No permanent measures have been taken to address the crisis. Manpower for sanitation is already scarce and finding volunteers is unlikely. DMC should have a dedicated workforce for waste management in times of crisis.”In Feb, the same company’s staff went on strike and were promised relief. Sanitation services were also interrupted during a strike by DMC personnel in March.“There was no collection for three days, resulting in heaps at public places along Canal Road and the Sahastradhara Bypass Road,” said Yesh Veer Arya, a Canal Road resident. While chief health officer Dr Avinash Khanna could not be reached for comments, sources at DMC said that issues of the workers have been resolved and waste management services are expected to run smoothly in the coming days.
