Waste Management driver charged after motorist slams into 1,600-pound dumpster

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A man was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after he slammed into a dumpster abandoned by a Waste Management truck on Interstate 265 South near Stonestreet Road.

The man told Louisville Metro Police investigators he was unable to see the dumpster in time to stop before crashing into it, according to court documents. A witness told police he or she saw a Waste Management truck pull to the side of the road after the dumpster fell from the truck but left after a few minutes.

There’s no word on the condition of the man who hit the dumpster.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving several calls about the incident. They found the dumpster still in the roadway, with heavy damage, surrounded by debris. Officers notified Waste Management that its truck and operator needed to return to the scene.

The driver of the truck — 32-year-old Howard Wright — told police he panicked after he picked up the dumpster from a local Five Star Food Mart and it got stuck in the “up” position.

After further investigation, officers determined that the garbage truck hit a bridge on I-265 at the 4.3 mile marker, causing the dumpster to detach from the truck.

Wright was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance.
