‘Visionaries of the Year’ raise funds for blood cancer research


Friday night — the fight against blood cancer took center stage at Rivers Casino in Schenectady —

As the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society celebrated its ‘Albany Visionaries of the Year’ finale.

The finale is a philanthropic campaign and competition, honoring the leaders dedicated to raising funds to end a disease that someone is diagnosed with every 180 seconds in the U.S.

Funds raised through the LLS Visionaries of the Year Campaign go towards research – providing free information, education and support to patients, and nationwide advocacy efforts to accelerate treatments.

Bill Lia, vice chair, lLLS, co-owner, Lia auto group:

“We have our candidates who have been working hard for the past 10 weeks raising money to fight blood cancer and tonight we’re going to find out just how successful all of them were.”

Rick Ostroff, chair of board, LLS:

“It means everything there’s so many people here who whether they know people who has blood cancer, there are people here who are currently in treatment. It’s just a way of bringing people together.”

The event raised more than $1.2 million.

CBS 6’s own Greg Floyd served as emcee.
