Third party administrator for JXN Water touts progress being made to city’s

The interim third-party manager overseeing the city of Jackson’s water and sewer system is touting the progress his administration has made since the federal takeover.During the city of Jackson’s Public Works Committee Meeting held Wednesday, third-party administrator Ted Henefin said his administration has repaired over 500 leaks across the capital city. Henefin said the leak repairs have made the system operate much more stable over the last several months.Henefin said during the meeting that crews are working every day to make repairs on Jackson water pipe breaks and are making repairs to the sewage system. Henefin said the repairs are being done by local contractors.Progress is also being made at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant and the Jackson Fewell Water Plant. According to Henefin, consistently, 22 to 25 million gallons of water are being pumped out at O.B. Curtis.Henefin did mention some issues his administration said they are seeing in their water system repair efforts. Henefin said that the dry conditions have caused more increase in the demand for water, which has led to pipe breaks.”Much like a deep freeze, as the ground continues to dry out, the clay contracts, and as they are contracting, they are breaking pipes, so we have a lot more pipe breaks than we would normally have expected during this period of time,” Henefin said.Henefin told council members his team has been able to get out there and isolate the breaks and make repairs much quicker than they did in the past. Henefin said his administration is now focusing on pressure in South Jackson. Last week, 180 homes near the Shannon Dale neighborhood were converted from the surface water system to the well water system. Henefin said his administration has received positive feedback about the increase in pressure for those residents impacted. JXN Water still plans to conduct water shutoffs for those who have not made payments on their bills. Henefin said the shutoffs have been delayed due to the lack of water meter employees to turn the water back on after payment is received.”We don’t want to shut people off and not be able to turn on their water for two days because we don’t have the staff to do it,” Henefin said.JXN Water is encouraging customers that now is the time to get current on their bill with all the many ways to pay.
