SYDNEY MINES, N.S. — The inaugural Sydney Mines Highland Games is heading to the community to celebrate Scottish culture and traditions on Saturday, Aug. 19.
The Pitt Street Walking Track will become the games ground from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., featuring Scottish heavy events including the caber toss.
Participants will compete for the inaugural championship and other awards which will be named after the former north side coal pits to recognize the local legacy of coal mining. Local talent Bryan MacLean will be representing Sydney Mines.
Former world champion and current International Highland Games Federation (IHGF) president Francis Brebner will serve as games host.
In addition to competition, crowds will be entertained with Highland dancing and bagpiping performances as well as delicious food.
Opening ceremonies for the games hosted by the Sydney Mines Highland Games Society at 2 p.m. and wrap up with a Scottish concert at 6 p.m.
