Strengthening Bonds: Indo-France Joint Military Exercise “Shakti” Focuses on

The forthcoming 7th edition of the joint military exercise “Shakti” between India and France signifies a strong collaboration aimed at bolstering the capabilities of both nations’ armed forces.

Scheduled to commence on May 13 at the Umroi-based joint training node in Meghalaya, this fortnight-long exercise will witness the convergence of 90 personnel from the Indian Army’s Rajput Regiment and an equivalent number from France’s 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE).

This biennial training program, which alternates between India and France, is a testament to the commitment of both nations towards fostering mutual cooperation and enhancing military prowess. The previous session, held in France in November 2021, laid the groundwork for furthering interoperability and camaraderie between the armed forces of both countries.

Exercise Shakti, conducted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate, is strategically designed to elevate the capabilities of participating troops in conducting multi-domain operations, particularly in sub-conventional scenarios. The inclusion of observers from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force underscores the comprehensive nature of this exercise, ensuring a holistic approach towards enhancing operational effectiveness.

Aim of the Exercise

One of the key focuses of Exercise Shakti is to enhance physical fitness levels and refine tactical drills for operations at the grassroots level. Troops from both sides will engage in rigorous training exercises within semi-urban and mountainous terrains, simulating real-world scenarios to hone their skills in diverse environments. This emphasis on physical fitness and tactical proficiency reflects the commitment of both nations towards maintaining a high state of readiness and preparedness.

Moreover, the joint exercise serves as a platform for fostering interoperability and strengthening bilateral relations between India and France.

By facilitating mutual learning and exchange of best practices, Exercise Shakti aims to deepen the bond of friendship and cooperation between the armed forces personnel of both nations. Through collaborative efforts and shared experiences, the exercise endeavours to build trust and mutual understanding, laying a solid foundation for future defence cooperation initiatives.

In addition to enhancing operational capabilities, Exercise Shakti underscores the strategic significance of Indo-France military cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges. By synergizing their strengths and expertise, both nations are better positioned to tackle emerging threats and contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
