In Dharwad, a team of women under ‘Dharwad Janapada Samshodana Samsthe’ has come up with a unique idea to display the rich tradition and the importance of festivals in one’s life.
Under the leadership of Vishweshwari Basalingayya Hiremath, a group of like-minded women from different communities gathered at Rangayana premises on the eve of Sankranti and celebrated the festival in an ethnic way. More than a hundred women dressed in traditional Ilkal sarees and ornaments welcomed the first festival of the New Year. They wore variety of ornaments namely ‘Teeke Sara’, ‘Gundu Sara’, ‘Bilwar’, ‘Avalakki Sara’, ‘Dabu’ and ‘Vanki’ and rendered folk songs. The event was conducted to impart the importance of celebrating Sankranti and the ways to celebrate the festival.
They also displayed the rich tradition tagged to the festival and the ethnic dishes prepared on the occasion.
Almost all the parks and banks of waterbodies were crowded with people enjoying the serene atmosphere and varitey of food items.
Kudalasangama in Bagalkot district was crowded as were Naviluteertha near Savadatti, Almatti Dam in Vijayapura district and other dam sites.
To tickle taste buds, people had prepared sajje roti, pot curd, shenga holige, madli, gurellu-shenga chatni, brinjal bartha, fried chillies, and much more.
Makara Sankranti is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindus and is celebrated in almost all parts of the country in myriad cultural forms, with great devotion, fervor and gaiety. It is a harvest festival.
People visited their near and dear ones and exchanged ellu-bella (sesame and jaggery) and greeted each other.
