Richmond given nearly $40 million to replace aging natural gas pipes

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The City of Richmond has been awarded nearly $40 million from federal organizations to replace aging natural gas pipes throughout the city.

In a May 16 press release, the City announced that it had received $39 million for this purpose from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Safety Administration (PHMSA). These millions of dollars will be in addition to the $10 million previously awarded in April 2023.

The City will use this $49 million in total grant funds to “repair, rehabilitate or replace nearly 50 miles of pipe, resulting in a significant reduction in methane pollution emissions,” the release reads.

“These grant funds are hugely important as we continue to mitigate safety risks from legacy natural gas distribution pipes, particularly in underserved communities,” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said in the release. “Investments like this show a collective commitment to the safety and well-being of our communities. My administration has focused on equity since day one, which is why I’m proud Richmond can continue the work of providing access to reliable and affordable energy without further burdening ratepayers.”

This grant is reportedly the largest one given out across the county.
