Re/Max of Midland raises awareness and funds for breast cancer

Carrie Postma, realtor Re/Max of Midland, knows firsthand the importance of diagnosing breast cancer early as she lost her mother to the disease when she was just six years old.

In memory of her mother and all women who have been touched by breast cancer, Postma and the Re/Max team hosted a Rising Up Against Breast Cancer event on Wednesday, May 10, in conjunction with the MyMichigan Health Foundation.

“The event brought area realtors and friends together to bring awareness to the importance of the early detection of breast cancer,” Postma said. “We also raised funds for the Breast Health Fund at MyMichigan which benefits women in the Midland area.”

MyMichigan Health breast health experts provided guests with information on self-breast exams, breast density, screening mammograms, bone density and cancer genetics. Women could also register for a screening mammogram at the event.

“As a breast imaging radiologist, I know firsthand the importance of early detection in improving breast cancer outcomes,” said Lindsay Zeeb, M.D., fellowship trained breast radiologist, medical director of Breast Imaging at the Center for Women’s Health. “I’m honored to support my friend Carrie Postma in her efforts to raise awareness and funds for breast imaging services in our community, especially for women who may not have access to these crucial services.”

MyMichigan Health offers a variety of breast health and women’s health services, including advanced imaging technology such as 3-D mammography (also known as tomosynthesis), breast ultrasound, ultrasound breast screenings, breast MRI and stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI breast biopsy procedures. In addition, we offer a lifetime and genetic breast cancer risk assessment to identify women at higher than average risk. The Center for Women’s Health is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

“It is important for women to educate themselves on their breast health, and we are grateful to Carrie and her team for raising funds for area women,” said Denise O’Keefe, executive director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. “Through the event and donations, we raised more than $7,000 for the Breast Health Fund at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, helping improve access to breast health care in our community.”

“It’s especially meaningful to participate in this event around Mother’s Day when we can honor and remember those who have been affected by breast cancer. I hope that through events like this one, we can continue to educate and empower women to take control of their breast health,” Zeeb said.

“I’m overwhelmed and grateful for the support we received from our fellow realtors and community members,” Postma said. “I encourage all women to take care of their health and a key part of which is obtaining an annual mammogram.”
