Police issue alert about potential Bitcoin ATM scams | News


CHICO, Calif. – On Tuesday the Butte County Board of Supervisors will hear a presentation about growing concerns over Bitcoin ATM fraud.

The Bitcoin ATMs are located in several locations throughout Butte County, with 10 or more in Chico and Oroville, and at least 5 in Paradise and Gridley.

A detective from the Chico Police Department will address the board on Tuesday to explain the Bitcoin scams. He said the group most at risk of being scammed are people over 65 years old.

Scammers will use tactics including impersonating a government official, fake lottery or sweepstakes scams, and computer tech support scams. 

Some of the tactics include:

  •  Keep Talking to Victim throughout theft 
  • Remove large amounts of cash from legitimate bank and deposit it in Bitcoin ATM 
  • Instruct victim to specific bitcoin machine locations 
  • Suspect gives elderly victims instructions on how to use machine 
  • Victim supplies suspect with bitcoin wallet information 
  • Suspects use fear, intimidation, and threats   

The Butte County Board of Supervisors meeting starts at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Oroville.
