Syracuse, N.Y. — A person was rescued from a coal hopper in a Syracuse factory early Saturday morning, firefighters said.
Firefighters were called around 1:20 a.m. for someone trapped in a hole at the Eaton Crouse-Hinds facility at 1201 Wolf St., according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.
Rescue crews found the person in a coal hopper above a conveyer belt, Syracuse District Fire Chief Matthew Craner said. The hopper was 12 feet wide and 16 feet long, he said.
It’s not clear how deep the hopper was, how the person became trapped or how long they were trapped, Craner said.
Firefighters used webbing, a strong fabric that can be fashioned into harnesses, to lift the person out of the hopper and onto an elevated walkway, Craner said.
The person was taken to a hospital for treatment, Craner said.
A call to a company spokesperson for more information was not immediately returned Saturday.
The facility makes explosion-proof lighting for hazardous environments such as chemical plants and petroleum refineries.
