One Last Postcard From the Future of Clean Energy


Almost a decade ago, I had breakfast with Jon Moore, the chief executive of what was still then Bloomberg New Energy Finance, for a talk about the future. He asked me what I wanted to do next — in the context of a research business covering the growing world of climate change and the energy transition — and I responded, “I want to write an email to people every week.”

The reasoning behind my hasty response was (and still is) fairly basic. We are awash in information; time is scarce; it is particularly scarce for the type of people tasked with making key strategic decisions that will require years of investment for decades of payoff. Climate data is everywhere, but the connective tissue to make those numbers meaningful is not as abundant. Everyone, from the most junior analyst to the most seasoned board chair, is worried they are missing something. Everyone wants to be told something that is both useful and that they don’t already know.
