For years now, makeup wipes have been ruling our counters, closets, vanity boxes, handbags, and purses. They are easy to carry, conveniently available, and very simple to apply to remove makeup in an instant. However, as per several skincare experts and some dermatologists, makeup wipes are slowly getting a bad name.

Even Rihanna, who took out a new skincare file Fenty Skin, informed viewers how she didn’t want to launch makeup wipes to protect the environment and opted for a better cleanser for removing makeup. As we are progressing towards newer and better beauty standards, we need to understand that makeup wipes are completely unnecessary and can be extremely drying to the skin, thus, creating more damage than your makeup products.

Yes, makeup wipes shouldn’t just be tossed out. You can use them on a hot summer day to remove excess sweat from the body. However, avoid your face. Many wipes can also be used as a last-minute saviour as they can be placed in your handbag and can be used easily.

Some of the disadvantages of using makeup wipes are:

  1. Many wipes contain alcohol that can dry your skin and even irritate it.
  2. Makeup wipes contain strong preservatives that can cause allergies to the skin. While the preservatives are present to avoid any bacteria growth.
  3. Most makeup wipes technically do not contain ingredients that can truly remove your makeup. As most makeup are oil-based, you need an oil or a balm to break down the makeup pigment so that it comes off the skin. However, makeup wipes are known to just move around makeup and smearing it.
  4. The fabric of makeup wipes can create tears on the skin, thus, make your skin hypersensitive. Many wipes even cause abrasions that will burn the skin when the next product is applied to it.
  5. If you use makeup wipes regularly, you may see hyperpigmentation in the long run.

What is a cleansing balm or cleansing oil?

Cleansing balms are made up of emollients and oil-based ingredients that provide smoothness and oil to the face that help break up particles or surface dirt and impurities from the pores of the skin. Cleansing oil can be a single carrier oil or a combination of different oils that work well together to help remove dirt and grime from the skin while also providing nourishment without stripping away the natural oils of the skin.

However, the one thing you need to remember is using non-comedogenic oils. Many people have resorted to using oils like coconut oil and olive oil. Though these carrier oils have great benefits, they are pore-clogging oils that will create more dirt than melt your makeup. Therefore, use oils like sunflower oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil to remove your makeup.

One important tip to remember is cleaning the face with a water-based cleanser after removing makeup with a cleansing balm or an oil. Even if you are wearing sunscreen, it sits on the skin and you need to remove it before going to bed. Which is why a double cleanse is your way to smoother, cleaner, and acne-free skin.

5 reasons why cleansing balm or oil is a better option to remove makeup

Great for oily skin

Oil attracts oil, which is why cleansing oils or balms are great for oily skin or acne-prone skin. They remove the excess sebum without stripping the skin of the essential oils. They keep the skin hydrated and balanced.

No high level of preservatives

Unlike makeup wipes, cleansing balms or oils do not have high levels of preservatives. They are more stable because they contain oils that are beneficial and do not go bad very soon.

No irritation

Makeup wipes can irritate the skin due to excess alcohol. However, since alcohol is not present in many balms or oils, they are great for melting the makeup, and with the help of a water-based cleanser can be washed off from the skin.

No residue left

While makeup wipes can be pushing the dirt or impurities inside the pores, cleansing balms or oils will actually break down the dirt and not clog your pores.

No wrinkles over time

When we use wipes we pull and tug at our skin which over time causes premature aging, fine lines, and…
