Lake Charles Methanol announces plans for $3.2 billion renewable methanol plant
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Lake Charles Methanol announced plans for a new $3.2 billion manufacturing plant at the Port of Lake Charles that would turn natural gas and renewable gas feedstocks into blue methanol.
Methanol, which is found in hundreds of products, including plastics, synthetic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes, is also a clean energy resource that can be used as fuel for everything from cars to stoves. The facility would reform natural gas and renewal gas feedstocks into hydrogen, while capturing carbon dioxide, which would then be used to produce millions of tons per year of methanol.
LCM is leasing a 75-acre site from the Port of Lake Charles along the Calcasieu Ship Channel as the site for the new facility. An additional site near the Port’s new dock facilities will provide room for the project’s methanol storage tanks.
The proposed plant, if it moves forward as outlined, would create 123 direct jobs with an estimated average annual salary of nearly $136,000 and 605 indirect jobs in SWLA.
Lake Charles Methanol is currently conducting an engineering study and obtaining regulatory permits. The company expects to make a final investment decision by the middle of the year, with construction to start shortly afterward. It will take about 3.5 years to build and commission the plant, with commercial operations starting in late 2027.
Louisiana Economic Development offered an incentive package that includes a $5 million performance-based grant to reimburse infrastructure spending.
The multi-billion dollar plant is called Lake Charles Methanol II, as it is a different plan for the same location.
