Agents, execs believe Wiseman likely Warriors pick if no trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Another day, another NBA draft rumor.
Former Memphis center James Wiseman is believed to be the Warriors’ top choice if the team elects to hold onto the No. 2 overall draft pick, ESPN’s Mike Schmitz reported citing league sources.
“Agents and executives around the league consider Memphis big James Wiseman the most likely selection if the Warriors keep this pick,” Schmitz writes.
It was reported Thursday that the Warriors weren’t interested in drafting a center at No. 2, but the weeks leading up to any major American sports draft are characterized by smoke and mirrors, with agents and other “insiders” leaking information to either help their own cause or be a detriment to others.
Wiseman’s blend of size and athleticism makes him a tantalizing prospect for any team in need of frontcourt depth. The Warriors are expected to roll out Marquese Chriss as the starting center, but he is much more of a known commodity than Wiseman.
Golden State is looking to jump right back into championship contention alongside the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, and will want players ready to win now in the rotation. With teams expected to get a very limited amount of time for training camp and preparation for the 2020-21 season, it might be difficult to get Wiseman fully up to speed and competent in coach Steve Kerr’s system.
Schmitz also wrote that the expectation around the league remains that the Warriors will look to move the No. 2 overall pick, but if general manager Bob Myers can’t find an offer worth pulling the trigger on, Wiseman could be the guy.
