Hot coals from a grill that were “improperly” placed on a rear deck ignited a Silver Spring house fire that left a family of four and their dog displaced on Father’s Day, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).
Shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, MCFRS crews responded to a report of a fire in a two-story, single-family home in the 13400 block of Coachlamp Lane in Silver Spring, MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media. The home is located a few blocks off Layhill Road.
Firefighters determined the fire was ignited by hot coals or ashes from a grill that were “improperly” disposed of on a rear wooden deck of the home, Piringer said. The coals ignited the deck and then the siding of the house.
The fire had extended to the second floor and attic of the home before it was extinguished by firefighters, he said.
All of the home’s occupants had safely left the home and no injuries were reported, Piringer wrote.
