Great Lakes awarded dredge and disposal contract for Port Arthur LNG | LNG

US dredging services provider Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation has been awarded the marine dredging and disposal contract for Sempra’s Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project.

Located in southeast Texas, with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, the Phase 1 proposed project will include two natural gas liquefaction trains with a capacity of up to approximately 13 million tonnes per annum and new natural gas pipelines to deliver natural gas to the terminal.

Expected commercial operation dates for Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 Train 1 and Train 2 are 2027 and 2028, respectively. Sempra Infrastructure is also evaluating potential carbon capture and/or hydrogen facilities at the site.

For Great Lakes, the scope of the work on the project is to dredge the berthing pocket on the Port Arthur ship canal. The berthing pocket and turning basin will connect to the Port Arthur ship canal and will allow LNG vessels to berth, load, and depart safely.

A significant portion of the dredged materials will be placed by Great Lakes within designated Beneficial Use of Dredged Material (BUDM) areas to restore and enhance marshlands within a local wildlife refuge.

Lasse Petterson, President and CEO of Great Lakes, said the contract places the company’s backlog and recent pending awardable work at more than $1bn.

“Our proven performance and safety culture allows us to support the growth of LNG export in the US, which is a necessity in balancing energy affordability and overall sustainability,” he added.

Great Lakes was awarded the contract by Bechtel Energy, a global engineering, construction, and procurement firm that is managing the Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project in partnership with Sempra.

It is hoped that Great Lakes will start the project later this year.
