Funds being raised for families affected from street racing crash


The community rallying behind Sandia High School after a street racing crash badly hurt two volleyball players.”It was just kind of like thing after thing, like ‘oh my gosh, one of them needs pelvic surgery. Oh my gosh, maybe both of them do,'” Sandia High Volleyball Coach Emily Conway said.Conway describing the chaos of hearing about two of her players — Alana Hamilton and Sawyer Bennett.”What do we do and how do we rally, how do we support, and how do we fix?” Conway said.The first year coach said this accident is also impacting everyone around the two 14-year-olds. One of the girls mother’s involved in the crash passed away. A tragic accident creating action in the community. “We had a lot of people reach out to see what we could do to help raise money to help support in anyway we could,” Bubba 33’s Vanessa Quezada said.The manager of Bubba’s 33 said the news prompting Bubba’s 33 to help the two girls and their families with a Dine to Donate event. The restaurant also posting information on how to donate to the families on Facebook.”A portion of their proceeds go back into the organization or in this case, back to the family,” Quezada said.Conway said the response from their local community has been unbelievable. The families themselves she says are grateful.”Hearing from the families and how thankful they are for the community support has just been awesome,” Conway said. “We’re still here for them, and we will be here for them. It doesn’t stop when the season is over.”The Hamilton and Bennett Families Fund has raised over $11,000. The goal is to raise $20,000.
