A fire started by lighting this weekend in Carson National Forest brought a big response from U.S. Forest Service firefighting personnel and resources on Saturday, according to a USFS news release.Dubbed the American Mesa Fire, it grew to 400 acres and was zero percent contained in the latest update from the Forest Service late Sunday morning.The fire is about 16 miles southwest of Dulce, off Forest Road 310E. According to the release, a total of three hand crews, one hotshot crew, three engines and two helicopters have been aggressively trying to limit the fire’s growth because of its proximity to natural gas infrastructure.The fire was first reported around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. It was burning with high intensity among pinon and juniper trees in hot and dry conditions, which are expected to continue, the release said.KOAT will update this story as we receive more information from the Forest Service.
