Floyd Mayweather: Gervonta Davis Is ‘The Top Dog’

Floyd Mayweather is calling Gervonta Davis the gold standard of boxing’s lightweight division.

Davis was in action this past Saturday night, October 31. “Tank” put his WBA (Regular) Lightweight Title on the line. His opponent, Leo Santa Cruz, put his WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Championship up for grabs.

Davis scored a sensational knockout victory in the sixth round. It was a clean uppercut that slept Santa Cruz.

After the fight, Mayweather told reporters that Davis is in a position where he doesn’t have to call anyone out (via BoxingScene.com).

“As of right now, we wanna enjoy [the victory]. Tank had a long training camp. Tank had a long training camp, and we really wanna enjoy this victory. As soon as a fight is over, the first 10 seconds, ‘Who do you wanna fight? Who do you wanna fight?’ Tank is the top dog. Tank is on pay-per-view for a reason. Tank is where he’s at for a reason. So, we don’t wanna come up here and call different names out. ‘Oh, we wanna fight him. We wanna fight him. We wanna fight him.’ We don’t wanna do that. What we wanna do is let him go home and enjoy [himself} with his family, his daughter, his team. And then we’ll talk about that probably in what, 20, 30 days from now?”

Davis’ pro boxing record has now improved to 24-0. He has scored 23 knockouts along the way. “Tank” also became the first man to knock Santa Cruz out. Time will tell what’s next for Davis but Mayweather has said that he’d like “Tank” to have one more fight before going one-on-one with Teofimo Lopez.
