Final outdoor farmers market of 2023 was bustling

Saturday was the last day of the 2023 Evanston farmers market season until next spring. The weather was brisk with plenty of sunshine, and shoppers came out in droves. Any child who stopped by the Spud Club to work on a sticker project were given a sunflower to take home.

Myra Gorman, outgoing market manager, resigned to begin a new professional adventure as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. She was there on Saturday managing the normal chaos, answering questions and receiving good wishes from the vendors, especially those she nurtured for the past dozen years.

The new market manager, Vanessa Champagne, was there, too, observing the scene and thinking about the long list of winter tasks ahead.

Due to renovations being made to the Ecology Center, the usual site of the winter market, the city is not sponsoring an indoor market season this year.

For farmers market fanatics desperate for a food fix during the fall and winter seasons, Immanuel Lutheran Church, 616 Lake St., is hosting an indoor farmers market for nine Saturdays. The Immanuel Lutheran market will be open from from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Nov. 18, Dec. 2 and 16, Jan. 6 and 20, Feb. 3 and 17, and March 2 and 16.

The 2024 Evanston farmers market is scheduled to open on Saturday, May 4.
