EDITORIAL: Christmas classic benefits United Way agencies | Opinion

Do something fun. Do something good.

It’s possible to do both at the same time Sunday afternoon when Enid’s Gaslight Theatre presents “A Christmas Story” as a stage play. Viewing that Christmas classic should be fun, especially with local talent on stage.

But it’s also doing good, because the Sunday matinee performance will be produced by the Enid News & Eagle as a benefit for United Way of Northwest Oklahoma. The price of admission to the 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, performance goes to the United Way to benefit the 14 United Way partner agencies serving people in Enid and the 17-county area of Northwest Oklahoma.

Directed by Catina Sundvall, “A Christmas Story” is a perennial holiday favorite. It follows the story of Ralphie and his stereotypical Midwestern family during a Christmas season in the 1940s. You’ll recall 9-year-old Ralphie Parker is on a quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus at Higbee’s Department Store. Their consistent reply: “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!”

The stage play includes all of the fun elements from the beloved movie, including the boys experimenting with a wet tongue on a cold lamp post, a Little Orphan Annie decoder pin and Ralphie’s father winning a prized lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking.

Gaslight Theatre is local civic theater at its finest. “A Christmas Story” will be on stage tonight, Saturday, Dec. 9, plus Sunday, Friday and next Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17. Denny Price Family YMCA will provide free babysitting services for patrons signing up and attending the Dec. 16 performance.

With the Enid News & Eagle covering the production fees for this Sunday, Dec. 10, ticket revenue will go to United Way agencies: Booker T. Washington Community Center, Cimarron Council Boy Scouts of America, Community Development Support Association, Catholic Charities, Denny Price Family YMCA, Garfield County Child Advocacy Council, Hedges Regional Speech and Hearing Center, Human Services Alliance of Greater Enid, Loaves & Fishes of NW Oklahoma, Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma, RSVP of Enid and North Central OK, Salvation Army of Enid, YWCA of Enid, and Youth and Family Services.

So, get out and enjoy something fun and do something good. Visit gaslighttheatre.org or call (580) 234-2307 for ticket information.
