Parts of Cedar Rapids were put under a Drinking Water Advisory on Friday after a water main break caused disruption to normal operation and sparked concerns for potential bacteria contamination.

Residents that live in certain areas of Wenig Drive NE and Brookland Drive NE are being advised by the city to boil any water that is used for personal consumption as a precautionary measure.

Officials with the city of Cedar Rapids outlined several precautionary steps for locals living in the affected addresses to follow, including:

  1. Bring water to a boil
  2. Let it rapidly boil for at least 1 minute
  3. Allow to cool completely before consuming
  4. DO NOT USE BOILED WATER IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, NURSING OR PREPARING FORMULA FOR INFANTS – USE ONLY BOTTLED WATER

City crews will restore water pressure and flush the affected areas once repairs to the water main are complete.

The Drinking Water Advisory will remain in effect until Monday, November 20th, or until bacteria levels are deemed at a safe enough level.

City officials say drinking water in all other areas of Cedar Rapids are safe to consume.
