Dow Futures Fall Amid Dealmaking Flurry

The animal spirits are stirring.

This week has started with a flurry of merger news: Juniper Networks stock surged early Tuesday on news that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is closing in on a $13 billion takeover of the smaller company.

Elsewhere, stock futures pointed to a lackluster start for markets Tuesday, while Boeing stock stabilized in offhours trading, after sinking Monday in response to the near-catastrophe on a 737 MAX 9 flight. Keep up with the story here.

Futures for the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100 and Dow industrials edged down.

Yields on 10-year Treasury notes held broadly steady.

Oil prices gained nearly 2%, with Brent crude trading above $77 a barrel. Traders are weighing disruptions in the Red Sea, a key shipping lane, against signs of weakening demand.

Japanese stocks notched a new multidecade high.

Bitcoin slipped. The cryptocurrency has rallied of late ahead of the possible launch of exchange-traded funds that would hold bitcoin as opposed to derivatives.

To watch in the coming days:

Earnings season kicks off in earnest this week. Major companies including JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are set to report Friday.

U.S. inflation data is up ahead, with December consumer-price data due Thursday, followed by producer prices Friday.
