Detroit launches ‘EasyPay’ plan for overdue water bills

DETROIT – The City of Detroit hopes a new payment plan can help residents and businesses with past-due water bills avoid a shutoff. EasyPay aims to alleviate the financial burden that others have experienced trying to get caught up under the city’s current payment plan. Now, residents, businesses, nonprofits and faith-based organizations can enroll for just $10.

From there, any past due balance will be broken down into payments for 36 months and tacked onto the current monthly usage. For example, a person owing $1,250 which is average for those behind on water bills could spread that into 36 payments of $34.17 a month. On average, a family of three pays $85 a month, which means the monthly payment would be $119.17.

The City’s previous plan would’ve required 10% down on an overdue balance upfront to spread the payments out.
