CLIMATE MATTERS: Future of gas sensors | Climate Matters

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — We know that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that can make the planet warmer if the numbers increase.

There is a company in Tucson that is working on sensors that will not only detect how much carbon dioxide changes in the air but also how other gases are changing in an environment over time.

We know that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that can make the planet warmer if the numbers increase.

Gas sensors aren’t new but a company that works out of Tucson is working on more advanced uses for the sensors that will not only be useful for the environment but also for growing plants in the future.

Micro hybrid is a German company that is starting to get a foothold here in the city of Tucson. The branch here is working on gas sensors that can be used for detecting greenhouse gases and other gases that may be harmful to plants in greenhouses.

Fabian Medina with Micro Hybrid said, “In terms of the environmental impact that our sensors have, being able to detect gases such as the project that’s going on here where we have carbon dioxide collection from all these sources that are emitting carbon dioxide.”

The sensors will also be able to take the level of gases that are needed to grow plants efficiently in a greenhouse. This is likely where farming is going in the future and the sensors are going to go a long way into maximizing growth of fruits and vegetables.

“The fruits and vegetables that are growing need a certain amount of methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and these sorts of gases in the air to be able to feed off of and grow. The growth rate is usually affected by these gas concentrations.”

Another thing you can expect with the future of the sensors is the potential of finding even smaller amounts of gases in your home in the air that could potentially lead to fires and prevent them before they happen.
