Cavco Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:CVCO) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than

It’s not a stretch to say that Cavco Industries, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:CVCO) price-to-earnings (or “P/E”) ratio of 18.2x right now seems quite “middle-of-the-road” compared to the market in the United States, where the median P/E ratio is around 17x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Recent times haven’t been advantageous for Cavco Industries as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company’s earnings trend will eventually fall in line with most others in the market. You’d much rather the company wasn’t bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you’d be hoping it doesn’t keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it’s not in favour.

Is There Some Growth For Cavco Industries?

Cavco Industries’ P/E ratio would be typical for a company that’s only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 32% decrease to the company’s bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 129% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 8.0% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 12% growth , the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Cavco Industries is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Cavco Industries’ P/E

Typically, we’d caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Cavco Industries’ analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn’t impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings aren’t likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it’s challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
