Castor oil to prevent hair loss: Have we been misled all along? | Life-style

In an era dominated by social media trends and content creators, the age-old adage “not everything you see is true” rings truer than ever. While our feeds showcase an array of supposed miracle remedies that can address several skin and hair related issues, it is important to take everything with a pinch of salt.

Content creator Dr Vaishali Shukla recently posted a reel mentioning that applying castor oil for hair fall is “one of the worst mistakes” one can make. “It’s a very common notion that castor oil can help prevent hair fall. However, it’s the opposite,” she asserts.

Dr Suman Chander Rao, MD dermatology, at Hyderabad, medical adviser for Entod Pharmaceuticals tells indianexpress.com, “Castor oil is popular for hair loss due to its unique properties. It contains ricinoleic acid, which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.”

Dr Rao disagrees with Dr Shukla, and believes that these properties help keep the scalp healthy by fighting off infections and reducing inflammation. She further states, “Castor oil is rich in nutrients, providing essential moisture to hair follicles, promoting hair growth, and preventing breakage. This combination of benefits has led to its reputation as a remedy for hair loss.”

Dr Kanu Verma, consultant, dermatologist, and cosmetologist at Aakash Healthcare, concurs, “Castor oil is and age-old therapy, however, there is no scientific data but it has the anti-oxidant facility and helps in hair fall prevention.”

Dr Verma adds, “Castor oil is very thick so it is recommended to dilute it with coconut oil and use as a pre-shampoo treatment.”

Primary causes of hair loss

According to Dr Rao, hair loss can stem from various factors including genetics, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, and certain medications.

“Castor oil can improve scalp health and promote hair growth, but it may not directly address these underlying causes. It’s important to identify and address the specific cause of hair loss for effective long-term solutions”, she says.

Potential risks or side effects associated with using castor oil

While castor oil is generally safe for use on the scalp, there are potential risks and side effects to consider. Dr Rao explains, “Some individuals may experience allergic reactions or skin irritation when using castor oil. Additionally, excessive use or leaving it on for prolonged periods can lead to greasiness or clogged pores.”

It’s crucial to perform a patch test before applying it extensively and to use it in moderation to avoid adverse reactions.

Alternative treatments to prevent hair loss

Dr Rao suggests alternative treatments for hair loss including FDA-approved topical solutions like minoxidil, which stimulate hair growth. Supplements such as biotin and saw palmetto may also be beneficial.

“Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, managing stress levels, and avoiding harsh hair treatments can contribute to overall hair health and reduce hair loss,” she elaborates.
