Building In Morganton Struck By Vehicle

A vehicle crashed into a building in Morganton. According to Morganton Public Safety, on Friday (October 6) just before 10 a.m., the agency responded to 222 West Union Street in reference to an incident in which a vehicle ran into a building. Upon arrival, fire units saw that a motor vehicle had breached through the exterior wall at that address. The vehicle crashed into the subsection of the structure and also broke a natural gas line creating a leak. East Union Street was shut down between King Street and North College Avenue for the safety of emergency personnel.

Fire personnel extracted an unconscious 74-year-old woman from the vehicle with Burke EMS transporting her to Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. Fire Crews quickly cut off the natural gas meters, stopping the gas leak. Shoring was put in place to prevent any further collapse of the breached wall. The patient was later transported to Mission Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

City inspections deemed the building unsafe until it can be reconstructed. Power was cut to the building as a precaution.
