Another Slowdown for Fancy Color Diamond Prices

May 21, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) – The rise in fancy color diamond prices slowed to just 0.1 per cent for a second consecutive quarter, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF).

Its Fancy Color Diamond Index, which tracks pricing data for fancy color diamonds of all sizes and intensities, enjoyed steady growth of 2.2 per cent during 2023, but has since lost much of its momentum.

Overall blue diamonds of all sizes and intensities fell by 0.4 per cent during Q1 2024, said the New York-based FCRF today (21 May) in its quarterly update. Yellows were down 0.1 per cent, while pinks bucked the trend with a 0.2 per cent uptick.

Fancy vivids (all colors) were up by 0.4 per cent, fancy intense stones increased 0.1 per cent and fancies fell by 0.7 per cent.

The market demonstrated “overall stability with minor pricing changes,” said the FCRF.

David Shara, FCRF data supplier said: “Seeing the fluctuations of most financial markets and the underperformance of colorless diamonds, it’s reassuring to witness colored diamonds as an island of stability in this financial climate.”

Since 2005 the FCRF has documented an overall increase of 212.9 per cent across all fancy color diamonds, led by pinks, which have risen by 399.4 per cent.
