An Island House near Rio Offers Restorative Water Views – DIRT

Paraty Bay is a lush spot on the Atlantic coast of Brazil, about midway between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The area is known for its clear, tropical blue waters, which make it an ideal destination for snorkeling. It is also becoming more and more known for its Caiçara cuisine. Tapioca and bananas, local seafood and dried fish, yams, and corn are combined into a unique cuisine that reflects the traditional fare of the region’s inhabitants, a blend of indigenous and Portuguese people. Restaurante do Hiltinho, one of only a couple restaurants on Ilha do Algodão, or “Cotton Island,” one of the many small islands scattered across Paraty Bay, is known for its Caiçara-style offerings.

Along the northwest shore of the almost entirely unspoiled island, nestled into the jungled hillsides above the turquoise water, are a small number of homes, many owned and rented by well-to-do Brazilians as vacation homes. One of the more compelling homes currently for sale on the island is situated right on the water, with a laid-back island lifestyle and all the restorative views anyone could want. The property, asking a bit less than $1.6 million, comprises about 1.3 acres, along with a 2,700-square-foot, three-bedroom, four-bathroom house. The property is available via Rubens Brotto at NestSeekers.

The simple, invitingly unassuming residence, charmingly and comfortably appointed with a nautically-inspired bohemian hodgepodge of furniture and decor, offers large living and dining rooms, an American-style kitchen, and a media lounge. The primary suite is set off from the main part of the house and offers an en-suite with a tub and its own balcony overlooking the sea. The lower level offers two more suites for guests, both with sea views. A large balcony outside the living room provides a stunning, elevated view of the bay.

The property boasts a private dock and a waterside pavilion with a barbecue and a dining table for 12 guests. The gardens also include tall coconut palms, several varieties of fruit trees, and a plethora of bromeliads and orchids. And, when the serenity of the surroundings doesn’t cure whatever might ail residents and guests, there’s even a chapel devoted to Our Lady of Remedies. After all, some of us need all the help we can get!

Among the retreat’s more practical features are a spring-fed water system, reservoirs that store 5,000 gallons of water, solar-suppled electricity, plus extra storage batteries, and a pair of generators that ensure that the house runs smoothly no matter what the weather. Not enough room? The property has been approved to add two additional bungalows.

It’s tough to imagine ever wanting to leave this secluded island paradise for any reason, but don’t forget to take guests out to sample the Caiçara cuisine!
