A Path to Success in Growing Industries

Many US companies are partnering with schools to attract and train the workers they need. Carlos Bonilla, a 22-year-old student, found his passion for automotive technology through a dual enrollment program in high school.

After exploring different courses, Bonilla discovered his interest in automotive technology. He enrolled in the Ford ASSET program, a two-year paid internship that combines classroom learning with on-the-job experience. Through this program, he gained hands-on knowledge about vehicle systems, models, and repairs.

The Ford ASSET program partners with 40 community colleges and technical schools across the country. Participants alternate between attending classes and working at Ford or Lincoln dealerships. The program has adapted to the growing demand for electric vehicles by incorporating more electric vehicle instruction into its curriculum.

Bonilla considered the program a worthwhile investment, despite paying roughly $9,000 in tuition. He found fulfillment in working with his hands, understanding how cars operate, and fixing them. This type of program provides an alternative path for young people who are unsure about pursuing traditional college education and incurring significant student debt.

As the automotive industry evolves, companies are seeking workers with technical skills in areas such as electric vehicles, semiconductor manufacturing, and renewable energy. Collaborations between companies and schools help bridge the skills gap and create a win-win situation for both parties.

Bonilla successfully completed the program and now works full-time as a technician at a Lincoln dealership. He plans to continue his education and gain more certifications, particularly in hybrid and electric vehicles. With a median annual wage of approximately $42,000, automotive service technicians and mechanics can find fulfilling careers in this industry.

Bonilla encourages other young people to explore their interests and choose a career path that aligns with their passions. By doing what they love, they can find fulfillment and avoid feeling like they’re just working to get by.

Overall, automotive training programs like the Ford ASSET program provide valuable opportunities for individuals like Bonilla to prepare for success in growing industries.
