$2.8 Million Homes in Rhode Island, California and Colorado

This house is less than half a block from the water, on a street lined with some of the city’s oldest homes. It is within easy walking distance of a public park, public beaches and Newport Harbor. The Gilded Age mansions of Bellevue Avenue, many open to the public, are less than 10 minutes away by car.

Ferries depart regularly from the harbor, carrying passengers to Providence and Block Island. Driving to Providence takes a little less than an hour. Boston is less than two hours away. New York City is about a four-hour drive, depending on traffic.

Size: 2,856 square feet

Price per square foot: $963

Indoors: A weathered wood fence separates this property from the street, and stairs lead up to the front entrance.

Inside is a foyer with original wide-plank hardwood floors and a staircase to the upper levels. To the left is a living room with street-facing windows and a fireplace that holds a cast-iron stove. To the right is a dining room with a fireplace that has its original brick hearth. An adjacent sitting room has a window seat and built-in bookshelves.

The updated kitchen, off the dining room, has stainless steel appliances, gray-blue cabinetry, a yellow center island and wallpaper printed with colorful roosters. This space has access to a patio and a powder room.

The primary bedroom, on the second floor, has a fireplace and windows overlooking the back and side yards. The room next door, used as a family room, has a fireplace, a built-in entertainment center and built-in bookshelves painted pale green. A full bathroom is off the hall, along with a laundry room that has a side-by-side washer and dryer.

Three more bedrooms are on the third floor, one currently used as a home office. They share a full bathroom with a white porcelain pedestal sink and soaking tub.

Outdoor space: The property is planted with mature trees, at least one bearing apples. The back patio is paved with stone and surrounded by flowering hedges. A second patio, paved in brick, is in a corner of the yard. There is also an outdoor dining area partially covered by a pergola. A small storage shed is painted the same green as the house. The off-street parking area has space for three cars.

Like many homes in Carmel, this one was built by Michael J. Murphy, whose whimsical bungalows and cottages made use of local materials, including gravel from the Carmel River. It is a few blocks from Carmel Plaza, an outdoor shopping center with wine-tasting rooms and quirky home-goods stores, and about the same distance from the coast: Carmel Beach is about 10 minutes away on foot.

Other Monterey Peninsula destinations, including Monterey and Pebble Beach, are within a 15-minute drive. Big Sur is 40 minutes away. Driving to Santa Cruz takes about an hour. San Jose is 90 minutes away and San Francisco about two hours.

Size: 1,874 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,491

Indoors: A stone path leads from the street to the front door, which opens into a foyer with original hardwood floors, used by the sellers as a reading nook.

The hardwood floors continue into a cozy living room with redwood walls, beamed ceilings, a fireplace framed by local stone and glass doors that open to a patio.

At the back of the house is a combined kitchen and eating area outfitted with a vintage range that has red enamel detailing and a farmhouse sink with skirted legs. There is room for a small sofa, a table and three chairs under a period-appropriate light fixture.

The primary suite is on this level, off a short hall between the living room and the kitchen. The bedroom has high, pitched wood ceilings, an alcove that could be a home office or dressing area, and an attached bathroom with a claw-foot tub and green tile floors.

A staircase in the living room leads to two more bedrooms on the second floor. One is big enough to hold a queen-size bed; the other holds two twin beds. They share a bathroom with a pedestal sink and a windowed shower.

Outdoor space: The brick patio off the living room is surrounded by a fence, with mature hedges above, creating a sense of privacy. The attached garage holds one car.

Taxes: $34,932 (estimated)
